The same year comes round every year

Every self-managed super fund has the same annual cycle: 11 recurring tasks, a pack of documents for the auditor, trustee minutes, and death benefit nominations (the notes saying who should receive a member’s super) that expire. Most trustees keep track of it in their heads, a spreadsheet or a shoebox. SMSF Cockpit keeps it all in one place, and shows you what needs attention.

How it works

  1. Set up the fund

Add your members, your target asset allocation, and the date you're reviewing the fund as at. About ten minutes, once.

  2. Record what you already know

Death benefit nominations, contributions, pension payments, key documents, insurance decisions, past trustee resolutions and your succession plan.

  3. Work from one page

What's Due Next gathers what needs attention across the annual cycle. Open an item, fix it, and watch it disappear.

The whole annual cycle, tracked

A tracker for each part of running an SMSF, built around what trustees and auditors actually ask for. Each one flags what needs attention, and they all roll up into What’s Due Next.

  • Annual compliance calendar

The 11 recurring annual tasks, judged against the due dates you enter.

  • Investment strategy

Your written strategy, each review signed off, and target versus actual allocation.

  • Annual audit checklist

A 19-item document pack, trustee confirmations, the auditor's findings and lodgement dates.

  • Trustee minutes

Numbered resolutions that can't be edited or deleted afterwards.

  • Death benefit nominations

Expiry dates and warnings, with renewals handled properly.

  • Contribution caps

Each member's contributions for the year against the caps you enter.

  • Minimum pension

The age-based minimum, pro-rated for a mid-year start, and whether you're on track.

  • TBAR events

Each transfer balance account event, and whether it has been reported.

  • Insurance reviews

The trustees' consideration of insurance for each member, and why.

  • Document register

Where each key document is kept, and when it was last reviewed.

  • Succession plan

The contacts and accounts someone would need if they had to step in.

  • Change history

Who added, changed or deleted what, and when, with the old and new values.

Why you can trust it

Records that can’t be rewritten

Trustee minutes and the change history can’t be edited or deleted after the fact. Every change is recorded with who made it and when, with the old and new values.

View-only for your accountant

An accountant or adviser can look at everything and download the data, but can’t change anything. That is enforced by the app itself, not just by hiding buttons.

Built and hosted in Australia

Australian financial years, the SMSF annual cycle, and your data held on servers in Sydney. Passwords are stored hashed, so nobody can read them back.

Safe to try first

Once you’re in, you can start with a sandbox fund full of fictional sample data, with guided exercises and a reset button. Learn your way around before you enter anything real.

Yours to take with you

Download the whole fund as one Excel workbook whenever you need it.

Plain about its limits

The Terms are clear that this is general information only, not advice, and the section below says what it doesn’t do.

Your accountant can see it too

Invite your accountant or adviser with view-only access. They can see everything the fund has recorded and download it, but can’t change anything, so there are fewer “what happened here?” emails. Your co-trustee can edit alongside you.

Where it fits

Your accountant, and the accounting software that keeps the fund’s numbers, look after the transactions, the financial statements and the tax return. SMSF Cockpit looks after the rest: the trustee’s yearly tasks, and the records that show they were done. Here’s how it compares with the ways most trustees keep track today.

  • Lists the yearly tasks

    A diary or a spreadsheet
Only if you set them up
    Leaving it to your accountant
Yes, usually worked through at year-end
    SMSF Cockpit
11 tasks, with a fresh set each financial year
  • Shows what's overdue or coming up

    A diary or a spreadsheet
Only if you check, or keep formulas working
    Leaving it to your accountant
When they get to your file
    SMSF Cockpit
Yes, on one page, as at a date you choose
  • Keeps a record that can't be quietly changed

    A diary or a spreadsheet
    Easy to overwrite
    Leaving it to your accountant
    Their records, not yours
    SMSF Cockpit
Minutes and a change history that can't be edited or deleted
  • Lets a co-trustee share the work

    A diary or a spreadsheet
    Emailing versions back and forth
    Leaving it to your accountant
    Not applicable
    SMSF Cockpit
    Yes, with their own login
  • Lets your accountant see it

    A diary or a spreadsheet
You tell them, or send the file
    Leaving it to your accountant
    Yes
    SMSF Cockpit
View-only access, whenever they need it
  • Does the accounts, tax return and lodgement

    A diary or a spreadsheet
    No
    Leaving it to your accountant
    Yes
    SMSF Cockpit
No. Your accountant still does that

Your accounting software keeps the numbers. SMSF Cockpit keeps the compliance record.

It doesn’t replace your accountant. It helps you arrive at year-end organised.

What it isn’t

  • It’s general information, not financial, tax or legal advice. Dates and figures are a guide: confirm them with your accountant, tax agent or auditor.
  • It doesn’t lodge anything with the ATO, and doesn’t connect to your bank or broker.
  • It doesn’t track your investments, prices or cash balances. It records compliance, not the fund’s assets.

Who’s behind this

Warwick Aubin

I’m Warwick Aubin, based in Sydney. I spent 30 years in financial markets, then in 2010 moved into microfinance and affordable housing. Through all of it, I’ve been a trustee of my own SMSF for 20 years.

Every year it was the same scramble: working out what was due, finding last year’s minutes, checking whether a nomination had lapsed, and pulling together what the auditor asked for. I kept it all in a spreadsheet, and the spreadsheet kept growing.

SMSF Cockpit is that spreadsheet, rebuilt properly: one place for the fund’s tasks, deadlines and records, so you can see what needs attention and have the paper trail ready. I use it for my own fund.

It isn’t advice, and it doesn’t replace your accountant or auditor. It’s the tool I wanted as a trustee, made simple enough for any trustee to use.

Questions

Is it open yet?

We're opening in stages. Join the waitlist and we'll email you when there's room for you.

Does it lodge anything with the ATO?

No. It records and flags; it never lodges anything and doesn't connect to your bank, broker or the ATO. You or your tax agent still lodge.

Does it replace my accountant or auditor?

No. It's general information, not financial, tax or legal advice. Dates and figures are a guide: confirm them with your accountant, tax agent or auditor. It's built to make working with them easier.

How is this different from SMSF accounting software?

Accounting software keeps the fund's numbers: its transactions, financial statements and tax return. SMSF Cockpit keeps the trustee's side: the yearly tasks, death benefit nominations, trustee minutes, strategy reviews and the papers the auditor asks for. It doesn't connect to accounting software. The two work side by side.

Who can see my fund's information?

Only the people you invite. You choose whether each person can edit (a co-trustee) or only look and download (an accountant), and that is enforced by the app itself.

Does it track my investments or balances?

No. It's about compliance and record-keeping, not portfolio tracking. Keep doing that wherever you do today.

Can my accountant see it too?

Yes, if you invite them. They get a view-only seat: they can look at everything and download it, but can't change anything, and every change anyone makes is recorded with who made it and when.

Where is my data kept?

On servers in Sydney, Australia. Our email service may handle an email address outside Australia while it delivers a message: the privacy policy has the details.

What will it cost?

Pricing hasn't been decided yet. People on the waitlist hear first.
