For Australian self-managed super funds

Your SMSF’s year, in one place.

Keeps your SMSF’s compliance tasks, deadlines and records in one place. Built for Australian trustees.

Cockpit works whether your SMSF’s trustee is a company or a group of individuals.

Early access. We’re opening it up in stages. I’m an accountant →

The Overview page for a sample fund: a list of what's due next with dates, a count of items needing attention, audit readiness with a progress bar, and tiles for the pension minimum, contribution caps and death benefit nominations.
A sample fund with fictional data. The Overview shows the whole year at a glance: what's due next, and where each part of the fund is up to.

The same tasks come round every year

Every self-managed super fund has the same annual cycle: 11 recurring tasks, a pack of documents for the auditor, trustee minutes, and death benefit nominations (the notes saying who should receive a member’s super) to keep up to date. Most trustees keep track in their heads, a spreadsheet or a shoebox. SMSF Cockpit keeps it all in one place, and shows you what needs attention.

How it works

It follows the year a trustee already has, from setting up to the audit.

  1. Start

    Set up and record

Add your members and the date you’re reviewing the fund as at (about ten minutes), then record what you already know: nominations, contributions, pension payments, key documents and past resolutions.

    • Practice fund to learn on (individual or company trustee)
  2. All year

    Work from one page

What’s Due Next gathers what needs attention across the annual cycle. If you turn reminders on, an email arrives as an important date gets close.

    • What’s Due Next
    • Reminder emails
    • Calendar link
  3. Year-end

    Hand over to your accountant

Pick a financial year and download one zip of the fund’s records, with a one-page summary of what was entered, to give your accountant.

    • Year-end pack
    • Excel, CSV, JSON
  4. Audit

    Have the paper trail ready

One printable audit pack of what auditors commonly ask for, or a read-only link for your auditor that expires and needs no account.

From reminder to handover

Through the year

A nudge before a date gets close

Turn reminders on and Cockpit emails you once as an important date comes up, such as a nomination expiring or the annual return falling due, plus a weekly summary when something needs attention. Or add every due date to Google, Outlook or Apple Calendar with a private link. Reminders are off until you switch them on, and they go by the dates you enter.

Year-end

One download for your accountant

Choose a financial year and download a zip: Excel, a CSV for every sheet, JSON and a one-page summary of which records were entered. Upload it wherever your accountant takes files. The summary says what has been recorded and what hasn’t; it doesn’t say whether anything is complete, and your accountant still does the accounts and the tax return.

Audit

The auditor’s paper trail, ready

The audit checklist keeps the 19-item document pack, each written request from the auditor with its 14 days counted, and the findings. Share it as one printable pack, or by a read-only link that works for 7, 14 or 30 days, shows one year only and can be withdrawn at any time.

The whole annual cycle, tracked

A tracker for each part of running an SMSF, built around what trustees and auditors actually ask for. Each one flags what needs attention, and they all roll up into What’s Due Next.

  • Annual compliance calendar

The 11 recurring annual tasks, judged against the due dates you enter. Give each task to someone in the fund, and see just yours.

  • Annual audit checklist

A 19-item document pack, trustee confirmations, each written request from the auditor with its 14 days counted, the findings and lodgement dates.

  • Death benefit nominations

Expiry dates and warnings, a coverage grid showing every member at a glance, and renewals handled properly.

  • Minimum pension

The age-based minimum worked out to the cent, pro-rated for a mid-year start, with payments so far and whether you're on track.

  • Trustee minutes

Numbered resolutions that can't be edited or deleted in the app (only deleting the whole fund removes them). Trustees acknowledge each one, and a mistaken minute is voided with a reason and stays in the log.

  • Investment strategy

Your written strategy, each review signed off, and target versus actual allocation in dollars, shown in a chart.

Early access, opening in stages. The first 50 funds to join pay the founding rate of $49 a year until 30 June 2028.

Why you can trust it

Records the app won’t let you rewrite

In the app, a trustee minute can’t be edited or deleted. A mistaken minute is voided with a reason and stays in the log with its number. Changes people make to a fund’s records are recorded automatically: who made the change, when, and the old and new values. The app has no way to edit or delete these entries. If the whole fund is deleted, its minutes and history are deleted with it.

View-only for your accountant

An accountant or adviser can look at everything, download it and leave a question on a page, but can’t change a record. The app enforces that, not just hidden buttons.

Where it fits

Your accountant, and the accounting software that keeps the fund’s numbers, look after the transactions, the financial statements and the tax return. Cockpit looks after the rest: the trustee’s yearly tasks, and the records that show they were done. Here’s how it compares with the ways most trustees keep track today.

  • Lists the yearly tasks

    A diary or a spreadsheet
Only if you set them up
    Leaving it to your accountant
Yes, usually worked through at year-end
    Cockpit
11 tasks, with a fresh set each financial year
  • Shows what's overdue or coming up

    A diary or a spreadsheet
Only if you check, or keep formulas working
    Leaving it to your accountant
When they get to your file
    Cockpit
Yes, on one page, as at a date you choose
  • Keeps a record of who changed what

    A diary or a spreadsheet
    Easy to overwrite
    Leaving it to your accountant
    Their records, not yours
    Cockpit
Minutes the app won't let you edit or delete, and a change history of the changes people make
  • Lets every trustee or director share the work

    A diary or a spreadsheet
    Emailing versions back and forth
    Leaving it to your accountant
    Not applicable
    Cockpit
    Yes, with their own login
  • Lets your accountant see it

    A diary or a spreadsheet
You tell them, or send the file
    Leaving it to your accountant
    Yes
    Cockpit
View-only access, whenever they need it
  • Does the accounts, tax return and lodgement

    A diary or a spreadsheet
    No
    Leaving it to your accountant
    Yes
    Cockpit
No. Your accountant still does that

Your accounting software keeps the numbers. Cockpit keeps the compliance record.

It doesn’t replace your accountant. It helps you arrive at year-end organised.

What it isn’t

  • It’s general information, not financial, tax or legal advice. Dates and figures are a guide: confirm them with your accountant, tax agent or auditor.
  • It doesn’t lodge anything with the ATO, and doesn’t connect to your bank or broker.
  • It doesn’t track your investments, prices or cash balances. It records compliance, not the fund’s portfolio: the only figures it asks for are ones a compliance rule tests, such as the in-house asset test at 30 June.

Who’s behind this

Warwick Aubin

I’m Warwick Aubin, based in Sydney. I spent 30 years in financial markets, then in 2010 moved into microfinance and affordable housing. Through all of it, I’ve been a trustee of my own SMSF for 20 years.

Every year it was the same scramble: working out what was due, finding last year’s minutes, checking whether a nomination had lapsed, and pulling together what the auditor asked for. I kept it all in a spreadsheet, and the spreadsheet kept growing.

Cockpit is that spreadsheet, rebuilt properly: one place for the fund’s tasks, deadlines and records, so you can see what needs attention and have the paper trail ready. I use it for my own fund.

It isn’t advice, and it doesn’t replace your accountant or auditor. It’s the tool I wanted as a trustee, made simple enough for any trustee to use.

Questions

Is it open yet?

Not for everyone yet. We're opening in stages: join the waitlist and we'll email you when there's room for you. If someone has sent you a link to the demo, you can try it with sample data.

Does it lodge anything with the ATO?

No. It records and flags; it never lodges anything and doesn't connect to your bank, broker or the ATO. You or your tax agent still lodge.

Does it replace my accountant or auditor?

No. It's general information, not financial, tax or legal advice. Dates and figures are a guide: confirm them with your accountant, tax agent or auditor. It's built to make working with them easier.

How is this different from SMSF accounting software?

Accounting software keeps the fund's numbers: its transactions, financial statements and tax return. Cockpit keeps the trustee's side: the yearly tasks, death benefit nominations, trustee minutes, strategy reviews and the papers the auditor asks for. It doesn't connect to accounting software. The two work side by side.

Who can see my fund's information?

Only the people you invite. You choose whether each person can edit (a co-trustee or director) or only look and download (an accountant), and that is enforced by the app itself.

Does it work if my SMSF has a company as trustee?

Yes. Record whether the trustee is individuals or a company, with its name and ACN, and list the directors in the trustee register. Sign-offs and meeting records then refer to directors, and you can enter the company's yearly ASIC review date so it appears in your calendar.

Does it track my investments or balances?

No. It's about compliance and record-keeping, not portfolio tracking. The only figures it asks for are ones a compliance rule tests, such as a pension balance at 1 July or the fund's total assets for the in-house asset test at 30 June. Keep tracking your investments wherever you do today.

Can I share it with my auditor?

Yes. The audit pack is one printable document with everything auditors commonly ask for. You can also give your auditor a read-only link that works for 7, 14 or 30 days. They need no account, it shows one year's pack only, and you can withdraw it at any time.

Can my accountant see it too?

Yes, if you invite them. They get a view-only seat: they can look at everything and download it, but can't change anything, and the app records the changes people make, with who made them and when.

Will it remind me when something is due?

If you turn reminders on: a weekly summary email when something needs attention, and one email as an important date gets close, sent once for each stage. You can also add every due date to Google, Outlook or Apple Calendar with a private link. They go by the dates you enter, so keep those up to date.

What do I give my accountant at year-end?

A year-end pack. Choose a financial year and download a zip of Excel, a CSV for every sheet, JSON and a one-page summary of which records were entered, then upload it wherever your accountant takes files. It records what you’ve entered; it doesn’t say whether anything is complete, and your accountant still does the accounts and the tax return.

Can I look after more than one fund?

Yes. Everything you look after is in one list under one login, with filters by status, and each fund keeps its own records. The price is per fund.

Where is my data kept?

On servers in Australia. Our email service may handle an email address outside Australia while it delivers a message: the privacy policy has the details.

What will it cost?

$99 a year for the whole fund. That's the total you pay, and it covers every trustee and your accountant's view-only access. The first 50 funds to join pay the founding rate of $49 a year until 30 June 2028. After that it is $99 a year.
